This opportunity is based in Stockton-on-Tees
Time Commitment: One full day per week or two half days, exact times to be agreed. They would like all volunteers to have the intention of staying for at least six months at Somewhere Else.
About Somewhere Else: They are a small community-focused charity operating in central Stockton with the aim of developing integration and building positive relationships. Their objective is to provide a range of services including therapeutic interventions, advocacy and social support with the broader aim of improving the lives of those accessing their services, many of whom are from the refugee/asylum seeker community.
The Volunteer Role: The main role is to support their beneficiaries in their dealings with others, that advocacy is provided to those that may experience some disadvantage due to English not being their first language. It is expected that the post-holder will liaise with external agencies and other professionals on behalf of and/or alongside the beneficiaries. Duties may include arranging appointments, requesting and documenting clarifying information, helping to complete forms, drafting letters on behalf of clients, assisting clients to draft their own letters and maintaining accurate records.
Useful Skills and Experience: Experience of, or demonstrable interest in, volunteering or working with asylum seekers and refugees. Good command of written and spoken English, and good telephone manner. Punctuality and reliability. Experience of volunteering or working with vulnerable people is desirable. Ability to deal sensitively to often complicated and traumatic issues.
Expectations of the Post-Holder: A full DBS check is required. The post-holder will engage in Safeguarding and Induction training and monthly supervision pertaining to the role and management of such. The post-holder will maintain confidentiality. As a small community-focused charity, they prioritise the privacy and dignity of the beneficiaries, ensuring that their personal information is protected and handled with the utmost care.
