About us

The TWP aims to create change for and by women of all ages in the Tees Valley area. We inspire women to come into their full power as leaders and influencers through creative self-expression.

We are looking for a new Chair from December 2024.

We run a wide-ranging programme of free poetry workshops and open mics for women, plus outreach with groups around writing their lived experiences. We also train new performers and workshop facilitators, supporting them towards paid employment as creative practitioners, and undertake a wide variety of community arts commissions.

We are currently funded by Arts Council England and a variety of statutory partners, and are in the process of updating our governance from constituted community group to a charity.

The TWP is an intersectional, trans-inclusive feminist organisation. All members, volunteers, and staff are asked to adhere to this when interacting with each other or the public.

Trustee Description

A general background in strategy, governance, finance, HR, and/or fundraising would be useful. Previous experience as a chair or trustee would be welcomed. Due to the nature and mission of the TWP, we ask that you are a woman, an intersectional feminist, resident in Teesside, and that you value poetry/creativity as a force for personal transformation and social good.

Role summary

Provides leadership and direction to the board of Trustees and enables the Board to fulfill their responsibilities for the overall governance and strategic direction of the organisation.

Ensures that the organisation pursues its objects as defined in its governing document and other relevant legislation/regulations.

Works in partnership with the artistic director, helping them achieve the aims of the organisation; and to optimise the relationship between the board, paid staff and volunteers.

Facilitates the board of trustees in stimulating excellent, well-rounded and carefully considered strategic decision-making.

Time commitment

  • The Board meets four times a year for standard meetings (one of which is usually the AGM), and once a year for longer Vision Days.
  • It is important that the chair be available to the AD on a regular basis, which may be scheduled conversations or add-hoc queries as suits.
  • The Chair may be required to join other Trustees in working groups if necessary, for example taking part in fundraising or policy review sub-groups.
