The sporty students at Kirkleatham Hall School were the biggest winners on a day of celebration at our second-ever £20,000 Sporting Golden Giveaway.
The school near Redcar topped a public poll ahead of 14 other local sports clubs and projects to win a £5,000 cash windfall from charitable movement Teesside Philanthropic Foundation.
Sport and PE is a “massive part” of education for the school’s students, aged 2-19, who have a range of conditions including autism, Downs Syndrome, and from moderate to profound learning difficulties.
Purchasing an indoor curling set for the students will now be top of the agenda for a school that regularly hosts sports as wide-ranging as Soccability, netball, table tennis, swimming, athletics and wheelchair basketball.
They received their £5,000 prize in a special presentation at the Riverside Stadium – home of our patrons Middlesbrough FC – from Trudie Chapman of Foundation patrons, Cool Blue Brand Communications.
Second place in the Golden Giveaway poll – and winners of £2,500, presented by Shaun Hughes of Erimus Insurance Brokers – were the Stockton-based Friends of Stainsby School of Gymnastics towards a new tumble track.
Winning £2,000, presented by Paul Drake of the Foundation’s new patron Sapere Software, was St Patrick’s RC Primary School in Thornaby, for new sports kit and equipment.
