Teesside sports star Aimee Willmott and Jade Jones – both powered by our FAST Fund – took Gold in Australia in the first two days of competition at the Commonwealth Games.
Massive congratulations to Middlesbrough-born swimmer Aimee on winning Gold on the Gold Coast.
FAST Fund-backed Aimee held off previous winner Hannah Miley to take Gold in the 400m individual medley.
We were proud to support Aimee with a £2,000 grant through out FAST Fund – Financial Assistance for Sportspeople on Teesside.
Congratulations also to FAST Fund-backed Jade Jones-Hall on winning Gold at the Commonwealth Games in the paratriathlon.
Jade, previously from Middlesbrough, now lives in Eaglescliffe. It was a brilliant effort to come from behind to take top spot after making the switch to a sport that involves a 750m swim, 20km cycling and a 5km wheelchair race.
Another FAST Fund-backed athlete competing on the Gold Coast was Kelly-Jo Robson. She vowed to do herself and her country proud – and weightlifter Kelly-Jo lived up to her promise.
Just three-and-a-half years after taking up the sport, the Skelton-born pocket dynamo finished sixth in the 48kg category on Australia’s Gold Coast.
Kelly-Jo, who lives in Stockton and works in Middlesbrough, received £2,000 from our FAST Fund.
That was the only funding she had received on her way to the Commonwealth Games despite being English champion.
Also in Australia with FAST Fund support is 18-year-old athlete Amy Carr, from Eaglescliffe. The Middlesbrough (Mandale) athlete, who has spina bifida, took part in the T37 long jump, finished seventh but will gain massively from the experience of taking part in such a prestigious international event.
