A care centre that offers valuable support to cancer sufferers and their families has received a £2,500 boost – and is now set for a visit by Boro stars.
The Trinity Holistic Centre at James Cook University Hospital provides valuable emotional and practical support to patients with a cancer diagnosis and their families.
Now it is set to launch a counselling service as a result of the cash boost after topping a public poll run by Middlesbrough and Teesside Philanthropic Foundation.
Dozens of local charities, community groups and schools applied for the Foundation’s Boro-backed Giveaway, with the shortlist of ten charities encouraging their supporters to vote during a month-long poll.
The Trinity Holistic Centre was the poll’s run-away winners, receiving 37% of the votes.
The Centre received their donation at a special presentation held at the Riverside Stadium when the Foundation’s patrons also presented cheques of between £500 and £1,500 to nine runners-up.
After receiving a cheque from Simon Wake of Foundation patrons The Endeavour Partnership LLP, the Centre’s business manager Heather McLean said: “This is wonderful news for the patients, family members and staff at the Trinity Holistic Centre.
“It was a real team effort by everyone to ensure we topped the poll to win the £2,500. And it will make an immediate difference as it allows us to start our counselling service and expand our inpatient bedside service.
“People often use our service for relaxation and space during an incredibly difficult time in their lives or for therapies to help manage some of the unpleasant side effects of their illness or treatment.
“We are honoured that many of our visitors describe the Centre as their haven.”
Along with the £2,500 donation, the hospital service also wins a forthcoming visit from two Boro stars, thanks to the support of Foundation patrons Middlesbrough FC.

• Tapshoes and Tutus School of Dance, Billingham – £1,500 presented by Foundation patron Alistair Waite.
• Pennyman Primary Academy, Middlesbrough – £1,000 presented by Elaine Bunn of the Foundation’s newest patrons, Nortech.
• Loftus Dolphins Swimming Club – £1,000 presented by Shaun Hughes of Erimus Insurance Brokers.
• Community Campus, Billingham – £1,000 presented by Stockton Machine Company managing director Mark Smith.
• 1st Saltburn Scout Group – £750 presented by Nigel Willis of Redcar firm First Choice Labels.
• My Sisters Place – £750 presented by Jo-Ann Swinnerton of Foundation patrons Middlesbrough Football Club.
• Breckon Hill Community Enterprise, Middlesbrough – £500 presented by Emma Simkins of Henderson Insurance Brokers.
• Swerve Table Tennis Club, Middlesbrough – £500 presented by Foundation patron Bill Scott.
• Middlesbrough Live at Home Scheme – £500 presented by Lisa Preston of Hunters Estate Agents.

Foundation patron and trustee Bill Scott said: “We congratulate every one of the organisations that will benefit from a share of the £10,000.
“It’s heartwarming to know that the Foundation is giving ten champions of the local community a real boost as part of our ongoing commitment to making Teesside a better place in which to live, work and do business.”
It was the third time in just 12 months the Foundation had held a £10,000 Goalden Giveaway, with more promised in 2015.
Previous beneficiaries of the Giveaways have included Teesside Samaritans, Middlesbrough Powerchair Football Club, Daisy Chain, Child Deaf Youth Project, the Sea Cadets, Tees Valley Wheelchair Sports Club, Middlesbrough District Scouts and South Cleveland Heart Fund.
