Could you volunteer?

Access to volunteering opportunities is crucial for businesses to inform positive change. With pressures for companies to introduce ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) policies into their framework, there has been a huge uptake in businesses offering their employees volunteering days, to give back to the community and to increase job satisfaction.

We spoke with Rachel McCulloch, Associate Director and Practice Manager of long-standing Patrons Active Chartered Financial Planners, to learn about the impact their volunteering policy has had within the organisation.

“We introduced a new volunteering policy this year, after looking into the social aspect of ESG, and how we can help our employees and community.” When asked why, Rachel said: “We’ve been Patrons of The Teesside Charity for over a decade and take part in as many activities as possible, so volunteering was the next step for us. You have got to support where you live, it was a no brainer that we had to “do something.

“The volunteering portal has been a fantastic asset; it has really pushed forward our ESG policy”

“The response and uptake have been amazing, so much so, we are looking at increasing the number
of volunteering days. We have put factors in place for workload, so we can support our employees to go the extra mile without having to worry about work.

“The Teesside Charity volunteering portal has been a fantastic asset; it has really pushed forward our ESG policy. Everything is in one place
and it’s easy for our team to use and sign-up to volunteering opportunities. As soon as we shared the portal with our employees four people signed-up straight away. The portal has opened our eyes to the wide range of charities out there and it’s very humbling. A lot of our team didn’t know what type of volunteering opportunities were available and it has shown them the different ways they can help a charity.

“The volunteering opportunity, no matter how small it is, helps the community but also helps the volunteers step out of their comfort zone and encourages them to talk to people from different cultures and backgrounds, all while finding out what’s happening in their area.”
