The Teesside Charity launches Teesside University scholarships

Published on: 26th January 2023

We partnered with Teesside University to offer new scholarships to support more students from the local region, who may not traditionally consider university, to reach their potential.

The Teesside Charity has pledged £15,000 to support three undergraduate students entering courses within Teesside University’s International Business School and the School of Computing, Engineering and Digital Technologies, with a scholarship awarded in 2022, another in 2023 and a third in 2024.

The Teesside Charity Scholarships are specifically aimed at those who would be first generation university students and will be linked to courses in business and computer science.

Through our scholarships, the successful students will benefit from financial support of £5,000 each, which will be distributed throughout their three-year course.

We are keen to support students at the beginning of their professional journeys, aiming to help them achieve their goals by providing financial support as they work towards their higher education qualification.

Jessica McDowell was the first to receive The Teesside Charity Scholarship back in 2022.

When speaking with Jessica about receiving the scholarship, she said: “I am delighted to have been awarded this scholarship from The Teesside Charity. It will allow me to purchase computer equipment, textbooks and help ease the financial burden of my studies. I am honoured to have the opportunity to interact and learn from the charity and the amazing work they do.”

In addition to our £15,000 scholarship donation, we have donated a new computer and software to Jack Dorsi, first year BSc (Hons) Information Technology student at Teesside University’s School of Computing, Engineering & Digital Technologies to help with his studies.

Our panel was highly impressed with Jack and although he was unsuccessful in the application process, we wanted to offer help in any way we could.

Jack, who plans to pursue a career in web development said: “The offer came out of the blue. It really means a lot and it will make such a massive difference to me.

“I work at a sports store when I’m not studying. I’ve been doing my university work on a laptop, which I have found difficult at times. This will be a really big help.”

Jack continued: “I had moved away from home and started to study accountancy at another university, but soon realised it wasn’t for me.

“I moved back home to Thornaby and decided to apply to study computing at Teesside. It was my girlfriend’s mam who encouraged me to apply for the scholarship.

“I’m really enjoying the course and having this computer will be a massive help.”

The scholarship will open to applicants once again in June 2023.
